In most text editors, it is easy to add symbols from the menu. Conspicuously absent are male and female symbols.

You can use their unicode values. In Word type 2640 (female) or 2642 (male) and then press ALT+X. For other possible gender codes, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_symbol.tl;dr
